Seed Time – Part I
SMALL THINGS
“Who despises the day of small things?” Zechariah 4:10a
A seed is a small thing. Most seeds do not look impressive. There is nothing about a seed that would make someone want to do something special because of the seed. A seed is JUST the beginning of something.
Usually, there is no celebration for the beginning of something. You don’t celebrate an idea when you first receive it. Most of the time we don’t celebrate our ideas at all, and all too often we take that idea and push it somewhere in the back of our minds because it really doesn’t fit into our normal lives right now.
That idea that you had for a business, a non-profit organization or a ministry in the church is a seed that God has planted in you to bring about a change in the world for His glory.
How many times have you wanted to start something because you believed in the idea (seed) that you had, but couldn’t get anyone else interested in what you were trying to accomplish? They can’t see your vision, and in fact it may be for the best that they don’t see you vision; therefore, they can’t see the grand things that are to come. They only see the seed, the small beginning and they despise it.
Despise means to look down on with contempt or aversion. When other people can’t catch your vision they will look down on you and what you’re working to accomplish. They will try to figure out how you think you can do something that they don’t think they can do.
Their fear is blocking them, why isn’t fear blocking you? Their past is hindering them, why isn’t your past hindering you? They don’t have enough faith to pull it off, how could you?
God started everything that grows in the earth with a seed – Genesis 1:11. He even called every human being after Adam and Eve a seed – an off-spring. Genesis 3:15.
Don’t despise the seed, the idea, that God has given you because it’s small and doesn’t really look like much right now. Take it from the back of your mind and put if on the front burner of your life. Begin to ask yourself these questions:
- What does the word of God say about the idea, the venture, I’m about to embark on?
- What do I need to do to make this a reality?
- How many hours per day do I have to devote to moving this idea forward?
“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God… But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by preserving produce a crop.” Luke 8:11 and 15
